SUMMARY:The Science Behind Writing Success: Building Effective K-12 Writing Programs
DESCRIPTION:Designed to empower K-12 leaders with the knowledge needed to strengthen writing instruction and achievement\, this engaging session will explore how to\nleverage the science of writing to prepare students for success in school and beyond. \nDuring this dynamic\, two-and-a-half-hour session led by the team at Smekens Education\, attendees will: \n\nDiscover how Dr. Hollis Scarborough’s Reading Rope (reading comprehension & word recognition) and Joan\nSedita’s Writing Rope (composition & transcription) form a unified\, science-backed approach to literacy.\nExplore the top five research-driven recommendations for establishing effective classroom practices in writing.\nCapture the vision for a school-wide writing program that focuses on essential standards-aligned writing\nskills\, prioritizes time for instruction and practice\, and provides effective feedback.\nUnderstand the multifaceted nature of teaching writing\, including balancing foundational language skills\, the\nexpression of ideas\, and ultimately writing about texts.\nUnderstand how to teach writing skills explicitly and systematically\, using the gradual release of responsibility and a clear scope and sequence to foster\nconsistent student growth.\nUncover time-saving strategies to integrate reading and writing instruction\, reducing cognitive load and maximizing classroom efficiency.\nLearn how to build teacher capacity for effective\, research-based writing instruction through professional development that flexes to fit any budget. This event will help instructional leaders gain evidence-based methods for building better writers at every level. Participants will leave energized and equipped with an\nunderstanding of how to create a cohesive\, systematic writing program that produces real results.\n\nREGISTER:  Click Here

DESCRIPTION:Audience:  District Cabinet-Level Teams \n\nAssess and discuss their district’s current readiness for Generative AI using the CoSN/CGCS Generative AI Maturity Tool across key domains.\nDefine a vision for the future of AI in their district\, aligned with their mission\, vision\, and values.\nDevelop a roadmap for AI adoption that includes actionable steps for advancing across the seven domains of AI maturity.\nIdentify key opportunities and risks in adopting Generative AI and create a strategy to address them.\nBuild a cross-functional leadership team that can guide their district’s AI strategy towards responsible and sustainable integration by forming the team and attending the workshop together\, ensuring they are prepared to move forward with their AI plan and make informed decisions as a group.\nLearn the most up-to-date information and gain a comprehensive understanding of Generative AI\, including current trends\, risks\, and opportunities in education.\nUse the CoSN webtool and AI tools to complete the workshop tasks\, enabling participants to directly apply these resources to assess their district’s AI readiness and develop an AI strategy.\n\nImportant Session Information:\n \n\nCertified CoSN Generative AI National Lead Trainers are leading the CoSN Generative AI District Leaders Workshop—a two-part\, in-person training with district work between sessions—designed to help school districts confidently assess their readiness for Generative AI\, understand its potential and risks\, and take the next steps toward a comprehensive AI strategy. \nThe workshop includes: \nDay 1 (Half Day) – Introduction to the CoSN/CGCS Generative AI Maturity Tool and exploration of how AI can impact instruction\, operations\, governance\, and planning. District teams leave with clear guidance for completing the readiness assessment and gathering evidence before Day 2. \nDistrict Work (Between Sessions) – Over the following weeks\, teams work locally to complete the Generative AI Maturity Assessment\, assign sections to the right roles\, collect evidence\, and align on current and desired maturity levels. \nDay 2 (Full Day) – Dive into results\, identification of strengths and gaps\, and creation of a customized Generative AI Improvement Plan with quarterly actions\, KPIs\, and clear next steps. \nDistrict teams will define a future vision for AI aligned with their mission and values\, then use supporting documents to draft an initial adoption roadmap with actionable steps across the seven domains of AI maturity. This structured process equips cross-functional leadership teams to assess their current state\, set clear priorities\, and move forward confidently—whether just starting their AI journey or building on existing efforts. \nFirst Steps: \n\nSelect a District Lead to coordinate the workshop effort.\nAssemble a District Team (3+ leaders is ideal).\nRegister all team members.\n\nRecommended attendees include the Superintendent\, Assistant Superintendent\, Technology Director\, Curriculum Director\, Operations Director\, Finance Officer\, and other cabinet-level positions. \nIn cases where smaller districts do not have formal roles in these areas\, they should identify the key decision-makers best suited to participate. \nREGISTER
