SUMMARY:Urge Congress to Pass the Afghan Adjustment Act
DESCRIPTION:It has been one year since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the harrowing scenes that captivated the world as aircraft rushed to depart its capital city of Kabul. Tens of thousands of Afghan nationals have now been resettled in communities across the United States\, many of whom served alongside U.S. servicemembers. They are now in need of a legal pathway to real and lasting safety. They need the Afghan Adjustment Act.  \nMost Afghans arrived with humanitarian parole\, which only allows someone to remain in the United States for a temporary duration. Currently\, the only pathway available to most of those relocated to the United States is asylum\, a complex and paperwork-intensive process with years-long processing backlogs. In order to make a successful asylum claim\, these Afghans will be asked to provide proof of their likely persecution if returned to Afghanistan—because of their work with Americans or international aid groups\, because of their efforts to report the truth about conditions on the ground\, because of their support for democratic values and human rights\, or because of other acts not tolerated by the Taliban. Documents that demonstrate this are the same ones that Afghans were advised to destroy in order to escape or elude the Taliban in the days that preceded the fall of Kabul.  \nThe bipartisan Afghan Adjustment Act (S. 4787/H.R. 8685)\, patterned after similar laws\, including legislation enacted after the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam\, provides an important correction by allowing recently resettled Afghans to apply to become lawful permanent residents\, the same status they would have received had they been admitted through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.  \nThe national resettlement agencies of the United States\, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)\, together with its Catholic Charities partners and other community-based organizations\, have been hard at work during the past year\, helping Afghans settle into their new homes. The task of helping Afghans to file asylum applications would fall to these same organizations and legal services providers\, which are already stretched thin. For these reasons\, the Afghan Adjustment Act would benefit not only the Afghans themselves but also the organizations serving them and federal agencies such as U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services\, which lacks the resources to accurately process tens of thousands of asylum applications in a timely manner. \nAs Bishop Mario Dorsonville\, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Migration\, said in a recent letter to Congress\, “it is both our moral duty and in our country’s best interest to provide our new Afghan neighbors with a pathway to permanent legal status.”  \n  \n \nResources: \n\nRead the recent press release from the USCCB discussing the Afghan Adjustment Act.\nView the text of the Afghan Adjustment Act\, as introduced in the Senate.\nView a section-by-section breakdown of the bill.\nThe National Immigration Forum has also created a summary of the bill.\nFor more information about our new Afghan neighbors and the need for passing the Afghan Adjustment Act\, view the Justice for Immigrants backgrounder.\n\nPray for integration of all newcomers.

SUMMARY:Braver Angels Fall Series Civility & Peace During the Election Season
DESCRIPTION:We all know how divided our society (and – even more tragically – our Church) has become. We’ve become so entrenched in our political identities that we’ve lost sight of who we are\, especially who we are as sisters and brothers in Christ. In an attempt to heal ourselves and our community from these dehumanizing and demonizing behaviors\, the Respect Life and Catholic Social Action offices are partnering with Braver Angels to offer a series of three on-line workshops during the election season. \nOn Thursday Sept. 29\, we’ll offer ‘Depolarizing Within’\, a workshop that teaches participants to look within and develop strategies for engaging politics without demonizing\, and how to constructively intervene in social conversations with like-minded peers. \nOn Thursday October 20\, we’ll over ‘Skills for Bridging the Divide’\, a workshop to help you through difficult political conversations with people in your life\, considering how to talk across the divide in a constructive\, empathetic way. \nAnd finally\, on Thursday Nov. 10 (two days after Election Day and just two weeks before Thanksgiving)\, we’ll offer ‘Families and Politics’\, a workshop that shows how we can talk about politics with our loved ones in a way that brings us closer together – not pulls us farther apart. \nYou can register at the links listed above\, and you can attend one\, two\, or all three of the sessions. All workshops will start at 6:30pm\, are offered free of charge\, and will be offered virtually. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to Andrew Musgrave. We look forward to meeting\, praying\, and working with you for a more compassionate world.

SUMMARY:Ask Congress to Act Now to Strengthen the Child Tax Credit
DESCRIPTION:Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jayson Smith recently announced a bipartisan agreement to improve the Child Tax Credit. Now is the time to reach out to your members of Congress and encourage them to pass a Child Tax Credit that does more for the poorest children. \nEvery year\, the Child Tax Credit (CTC) lifts millions of American families out of poverty and helps them live according to their dignity and with greater economic security. While the USCCB has long supported the CTC\, the current credit must be improved because it excludes many poor children. We must encourage Congress to support children and families by passing a strengthened CTC that prioritizes the poorest children.  Improving the credit in this way ensures that the lowest-income families have access to full benefits that foster the welcoming of new life and the building of the family. \nAs the U.S. bishops stated in their pastoral document\, Putting Children And Families First\, “Those with the greatest need require the greatest response. This is the ‘option for the poor’ in action. While every family needs support\, poor families and families facing discrimination carry the greatest burdens and require the most help. With limited resources\, we need to focus assistance on those with the greatest needs.” \nAn improved Child Tax Credit should also: \n\ncontinue to include mixed-status families\,\nbe available for the year before birth to help mothers in need welcome new life\,\nensure the credit does not undermine the building of families\, and\nnot offset the cost of the credit by cutting programs that serve those most in need\n\nPlease urge your members of Congress to work together to improve the Child Tax Credit to help support families and lift children out of poverty. \nWe encourage you to add your own personal story about why strengthening the Child Tax Credit is important to you. \nYou can read the most recent USCCB letter advocating for an improved Child Tax Credit here. \nTAKE ACTION NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
