DESCRIPTION:Learn the components of the English language that contribute to the development of reading.\nLearn about the phonology\, orthography and structure of the English language while taking a comprehensive look at how students learn to read and write.\nPlan and implement systematic\, explicit\, multisensory language instruction that meets the guidelines of the National Reading Panel and has been proven to be most effective in teaching students with Dyslexia and other reading difficulties.\nLearn how to incorporate Orton-Gillingham (OG) methodology into their core and intervention reading programs.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImportant Session Information:\n\nThe Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I Online encompasses 16 weeks of instruction\, including 45 hours of lecture and a 16-hour practicum. The course focuses on the phonology\, orthography and structure of the English language; takes a comprehensive look at how students learn to read and write; and helps teachers to recognize the characteristics of learning disabilities. \nWhat makes Hamilton County ESC’s program unique is the practicum: each participant is assigned to a Master Teacher who provides one-to-one coaching and feedback on the creation and teaching of 16 lesson plans custom-tailored for the student the participant is tutoring during the course. Master Teachers will make 12 visits to the participants schools to observe their instruction\, enabling instructors to give specific feedback at point of need on both planning and implementation of OG methodology. The maximum instructor/participant ratio in any cohort is 8:1. She completed her Level 1 certification in March 2007 and has been presenting for Learning Without Tears since 2009. \n\n \nValerie Zaryczny received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest University and a Master of Science degree in occupational therapy from Washington University in St. Louis. She is a pediatric OT with experience across multiple settings including schools\, clinics\, early intervention\, and teletherapy. She first attended a Handwriting Without Tears workshop in 2004 as a new therapist and has been in love with the products and methods ever since! There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Michael Heithaus is Dean of the College of Arts\, Sciences & Education and a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences\, Florida International University in Miami\, FL. Dr. Heithaus joined the FIU Biology Department in 2003 and has served as Director of the Marine Sciences Program and Executive Director of the School of Environment\, Arts\, and Society\, which brings together the natural and social sciences and humanities to develop solutions to today’s environmental challenges. His research focuses on predator-prey interactions and the ecological importance of large marine species. Dr. Heithaus is author of HMH Into Science® and is a STEM consultant of HMH Algebra 1\, Geometry\, and Algebra 2. She is a founding member and board member of the North Carolina CoSN (Consortium for School Networking) chapter and a CoSN CETL (Certified Educational Technology Leader). \n\nColleen Hoy is the director of product management at Education Networks of America (ENA). In this role\, she oversees the strategy\, definition\, development\, and promotion of ENA’s cybersecurity product portfolio and also provides leadership to ENA’s overall suite of services that support the technology needs of K-12\, higher education institutions\, libraries\, and rural healthcare providers nationwide. She was previously the director of programs and partnerships at Nashville Technology Council and a consultant for c3/consulting (now Ankura). Colleen has served on a number of nonprofit Boards of Directors\, including Nashville MTA\, Alignment Nashville Learning Technology Committee\, and the Nashville Social Enterprise Alliance. They’ll also cover how to help teachers give much-needed support to struggling students often left to rely on guesswork to get by. \nThis edWebinar will offer a look back at how reading education has evolved over the years and explore the importance of literacy programs grounded in reading science. Another key topic? Donell and Stacy will tackle why\, if incorrectly used\, technology can sometimes do more harm than good in literacy instruction. Strategies and Support for Teaching K-3 Readers \n\nAbout the Presenters \nStacy Hurst is an assistant professor of teacher education at Southern Utah University where she teaches courses in literacy and early childhood education. She has degrees in sociology and elementary education and a master’s degree in education. Her extensive experience also includes teaching first grade and working as a literacy coach and reading specialist. Stacy is the co-author of a foundational literacy program and is also the chief education officer at Reading Horizons\, an educational software company that teaches structured literacy concepts through a blended software and direct instruction approach. Stacy is passionate about literacy and believes that learning how to read well is a civil right. \n\nDonell Pons has a husband and several children with dyslexia. When Donell discovered her son had dyslexia and was struggling to find appropriate services\, she went back to school and received a dual MED and MAT in teaching and learning with a special education certification\, none of which addressed dyslexia. Donell has taught secondary language arts and worked at a charter school focusing on supporting students on the autism spectrum. Donell is trained in multiple structured literacy-based reading methods. She was the literacy and reading coordinator and ELL director at a public charter school and her efforts to implement a comprehensive literacy program there were featured in Language Magazine\, October 2016 and MiddleWeb SmartBrief. Donell has produced a nationally recognized three-part webcast series on teaching reading and recognizing dyslexia and has had numerous articles in educational publications. She is a member of Decoding Dyslexia Utah and helped compose the Utah State Dyslexia Handbook. She is currently working with adults in a workplace literacy program as well as supporting students with dyslexia in the transition to college. \n\nAbout the Moderator \nJeanette Beninati is a former educator with a strong background in strategic planning\, education technology and training\, and professional development. Her experience spans education\, technology\, assessment and instruction\, consulting\, training\, efficacy research\, and learning disabilities. In her role as Marketing Director\, she oversees the company’s K-12 education marketing initiatives. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 38th annual Pro-Life Rosary Procession & Rally!\nMark you calendars for Saturday\, January 22\, 2022 at 11am.\nPlease spread the word and bring friends!\n There will be hot cocoa and donuts at the rally for our wonderful supporters.\n Make sure to sign up for our email list at City Hall before we begin because we will be drawing names for a beautiful handmade Rosary as well as three $50 Visa gift cards!\n Feel free to park at Fountain Square. Beginning at 10:00am our Pro-Life Shuttle vans (clearly marked and parked on the street at the Square) will begin taking supporters to City Hall before the 11:00 start time.
