SUMMARY:Behavior Solutions: A Practical Roadmap for SEL Success in All Tiers Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If we have learned anything through teaching during this pandemic\, it is that the term “behavior” doesn’t simply refer to a disruptive student. The term behavior refers to academic behaviors (skill-based) and social behaviors (will-based) and both need to be taught and reinforced in every tier of systematic SEL supports at your school. \nFostering positive behavior and SEL by utilizing the PLC at Work® and RTI at Work™ processes will boost your school’s positive school culture\, increase attendance\, improve behavior\, prepare students for life\, and address inequities in school discipline. This workshop is designed to create a practical roadmap for meeting the needs of the whole child. \n\nIdentify their school’s current reality in each tier.\nCreate a roadmap for successful schoolwide implementation.\nAcquire strategies to avoid implementation barriers.\nDiscover how to function as a PLC with the focus on behavior and assign RTI in each tier.\nStudy each tier of behavioral support—prevention\, intervention\, and remediation—and understand how to construct successful behavior intervention processes at each tier.\nRecognize the roles and responsibilities for the leadership team\, intervention team\, and teacher teams during SEL implementation.\nGain evidence-based solutions to address complex challenges such as engagement\, motivation\, and attendance.\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Collective Student Efficacy
DESCRIPTION:Harness the power of collective efficacy to accelerate students’ learning.  Do your students understand the potential of collaborating with others?  Do they believe that they will learn more if they develop both “I” skills and “We” skills?  Collective student efficacy requires more than pushing tables together and inviting students to talk or ‘work in groups’. Learn the essentials of task design\, skill development\, assessment\, and shared definitions of success. \nSuccess Criteria for participants\n• Identify the vital components and evidence-based success criteria necessary for students’ collective efficacy\n• Describe the “I” and “We” skills that need to be developed to ensure students have the skills and confidence to contribute to group success\n• Explain the nature of learning design\, lesson planning\, and classroom structures that ensure opportunities for all students to engage in collective efficacy \nRegister

SUMMARY:Engaging Readers with Nonfiction Texts
DESCRIPTION:Students often choose fiction books when given the choice of reading\nmaterials. They often see nonfiction reading as reading that is done for school\ninstead of for personal enjoyment. We can help students find books that\nthey want to read “for fun” if we think differently about the books we have\navailable\, the ways we use nonfiction in our teaching\, and how we book talk\nnonfiction books. \n  \nRegister

SUMMARY:Teaching About the Holocaust in American Context
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be an American\, and what should be America’s role in the world? These questions are as old as the Republic. They are revisited by each generation\, especially in times of crisis. SUMMARY:The Magic of Music and Movement in Early Childhood Education
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on\, participatory edWebinar will bring to teachers a new perspective on using music with children. They will see the connection between music and movement and the active nature of the child\, as well as how music can effectively be used to meet the cognitive\, emotional\, social and physical needs of young children. \nThe goal of the session is to reaffirm the use of music in the classroom by showing how\, when combined with movement\, it can be a vital and powerful tool in the education of children. To illustrate this\, Stephen Fite will break music down into three essential elements—Rhythm\, Repetition\, and Melody—and discuss how each part affects us individually. When music and movement are combined\, children are more likely to participate\, but more importantly\, will retain more information for a longer period of time. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to anyone involved in early childhood education. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nAs long as Stephen Fite can remember\, he has always loved music. At the young age of five\, he had big dreams of being the fifth Beatle. That whole British band thing never panned out\, but he has found something even better. He has realized his dream of playing before crowds of screaming fans—the very young variety. The bonus is that through his play he is able to touch their lives by aiding in their education. He is an award-winning musician/writer whose albums have received 18 nationally recognized honors. \nStephen has been giving workshops and keynotes since 1986 and has presented keynotes at the following conferences: Kindergarten Teachers of Texas\, Oklahoma Early Childhood Association\, DLM Summer Institute\, Southern Early Childhood Association\, Missouri AEYC\, Illinois PreK – Kindergarten Conference\, Kaleidoscope Conference\, and many more. \nRegister\n

SUMMARY:Grading From the Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:Grading From the Inside Out Virtual Workshop: A Live 2-Day Event with Tom Schimmer\nThe Grading From the Inside Out Virtual Workshop is focused on the practices and processes that will modernize grading and reporting systems to be more aligned to our standards-based instructional paradigm. By developing a standards-based mindset\, participants of this Zoom-exclusive event will come to see how a seamless relationship between the formative and summative purposes of assessment will maximize the potential success of each and every learner. Rather than forcing grading reform through a new policy\, grading program\, or report card template\, long-term grading reform begins on the inside—how we rethink grading practices and processes—and works its way out. \nParticipants are encouraged to attend this event as a team. Whether your purpose is to utilize sound grading practices in your own classroom\, modernize grading practices across a grade level or within a department\, or move to a standards-based grading model at the school or district level\, this two-day digital training session is for you. Over the course of the workshop\, widely held traditional beliefs about grading will be challenged as participants come to know what it takes to ensure that teachers produce accurate grades and confident learners. \nTeam time will be made available to support collaborative action planning. \nParticipants will: \n\nRecognize why traditional grading practices are no longer relevant and how grading practices can be modernized in a standards-based instructional classroom\nDevelop grading true north (accuracy and confidence)\, the essential overarching vision for sound assessment and grading practices\nAcquire a standards-based mindset and the specific strategies that lead to a rethinking of how grades are determined\nGain protocols and practices to hold students more accountable for learning without compromising the accuracy of their proficiency grades\nLearn how to teach\, assess\, and report on student attributes\, student growth\, and cross-curricular competencies\nUnderstand why homework should be repurposed to be a formative assessment strategy\, and obtain ways in which homework can become a more productive\, learning-centered exercise\nExplore specific practices\, including reassessment\, grade determination\, the five myths of standards-based grading\, and the differences between levels of proficiency and the traditional grading scale\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Music and Movement Activities That Support Young Children's Social and Emotional Learning
DESCRIPTION:Healthy social-emotional development in early childhood can have a profound impact on a child’s overall development and learning. In fact\, many early childhood experts see positive social and emotional skills as paramount for school readiness and later school and life success. With the interruption of the school year and less socialization opportunities\, there is valid concern among researchers\, educators\, and parents that the COVID-19 pandemic has had—and will continue to have—a negative impact on young children’s social and emotional development. \nMusic education curriculum components not only support music development but are naturally supportive tools for social and emotional learning in early childhood. Developmentally appropriate\, participatory\, group\, and dyad music and movement activities have special characteristics that can support young children as they develop socially and emotionally\, and also support social competence and reduce stress. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz will review the important dimensions of social and emotional development and share some early research on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on young children’s social and emotional learning. She will then demonstrate fun and accessible music activities that support a range of social and emotional skills\, such as cooperation\, prosocial skills\, and self-regulation\, which all contribute to social competence and positive group process in the preschool classroom. Attendees will also gain strategies for extending the music making—and therefore the developmental benefits—to the home. \nAttendees will leave this edWebinar with a deeper understanding of the ways in which active music making can naturally support children’s social and emotional learning during the preschool years\, as well as having experienced some new songs and music activities they can use right away in their work with children. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to preK-3 teachers. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nLili M. Levinowitz\, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Music Education at Rowan University. She is the co-author of the early childhood music and movement program\, Music Together\, and Director of Research for Music Together Worldwide. Dr. Levinowitz is considered a national authority on early childhood music. In addition to teaching very young children\, she presents at national and international music education and early childhood education conferences. She also presents professional development webinars to early childhood educators and the music education community. She was recently a key contributor to the NAfME (National Association for Music Education) teaching guidelines for early childhood music education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her articles appear frequently in professional journals and popular magazines. She earned her M.M. and Ph.D. from Temple University and her B.M. from Westminster Choir College. \n\nAbout the Host \nLisa Chouteau is the Music in Early Learning edWebinar series host. She is the senior video producer and manager of video production at Music Together Worldwide and holds a B.S. in business administration\, training\, and development from The College of New Jersey.
