SUMMARY:Leveraging Micro-Credentials to Strengthen Equitable Career Pathways in Rural Communities
DESCRIPTION:Can micro-credentials be used to create new pathways to social mobility for rural learners who are impacted by poverty\, particularly for Black\, Latino\, and Indigenous people? Digital Promise joins learners and leaders from the University of Maine System’s All Learning Counts Initiative and the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative to highlight preliminary findings from our ongoing research on the use of micro-credentials in rural postsecondary institutions. The conversation will focus on career pathways in K-12 education and information technology. Attendees will hear directly from rural postsecondary leaders and learners to understand how they are: \n\nUsing micro-credentials for affordable\, flexible\, and meaningful skill development that leads to better opportunities and higher wages\nIncreasing efforts to prioritize social mobility for poverty-impacted communities\nDeveloping educator-industry partnerships to promote sustainable career pathways\n\nThis edLeader Panel is intended for K-12 educators and school and district leaders\, adult education and career service providers\, higher education institutions\, employers\, and community leaders interested in leveraging micro-credentials to create real-time pathways toward social mobility for people in rural communities. SUMMARY:Attendance and Academics: Making Critical Connections
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nAttendance begets discovery\, exploration\, learning\, and achievement—it is the keystone of student growth and well-being. Prior to the pandemic\, one out of six students missed nearly a month of learning. Now\, data suggests students are missing more learning opportunities than ever. Join this edLeader Panel of instructional leaders to learn how they are making critical connections between attendance and achievement in their districts and what strategies they’re implementing to improve both. \nThis edLeader Panel will be of interest to preK-12 district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJennifer Lawson currently serves as the chief academic officer for the Cobb County School District where she previously served as the assistant superintendent of teaching and learning. She leads Cobb County School District academics in 112 schools that serve approximately 107\,000 students. Prior to joining the Teaching and Learning team\, Jennifer has served as a principal in both the Cobb County Schools and Marietta City Schools. SUMMARY:Grading From the Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:Grading From the Inside Out Virtual Workshop: A Live 2-Day Event with Tom Schimmer\nThe Grading From the Inside Out Virtual Workshop is focused on the practices and processes that will modernize grading and reporting systems to be more aligned to our standards-based instructional paradigm. By developing a standards-based mindset\, participants of this Zoom-exclusive event will come to see how a seamless relationship between the formative and summative purposes of assessment will maximize the potential success of each and every learner. Rather than forcing grading reform through a new policy\, grading program\, or report card template\, long-term grading reform begins on the inside—how we rethink grading practices and processes—and works its way out. \nParticipants are encouraged to attend this event as a team. Whether your purpose is to utilize sound grading practices in your own classroom\, modernize grading practices across a grade level or within a department\, or move to a standards-based grading model at the school or district level\, this two-day digital training session is for you. Over the course of the workshop\, widely held traditional beliefs about grading will be challenged as participants come to know what it takes to ensure that teachers produce accurate grades and confident learners. \nTeam time will be made available to support collaborative action planning. \nParticipants will: \n\nRecognize why traditional grading practices are no longer relevant and how grading practices can be modernized in a standards-based instructional classroom\nDevelop grading true north (accuracy and confidence)\, the essential overarching vision for sound assessment and grading practices\nAcquire a standards-based mindset and the specific strategies that lead to a rethinking of how grades are determined\nGain protocols and practices to hold students more accountable for learning without compromising the accuracy of their proficiency grades\nLearn how to teach\, assess\, and report on student attributes\, student growth\, and cross-curricular competencies\nUnderstand why homework should be repurposed to be a formative assessment strategy\, and obtain ways in which homework can become a more productive\, learning-centered exercise\nExplore specific practices\, including reassessment\, grade determination\, the five myths of standards-based grading\, and the differences between levels of proficiency and the traditional grading scale\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Response to Intervention at Work
DESCRIPTION:Proven techniques to close learning gaps\nRTI is not a series of implementation steps to cross off on a list\, but a way of thinking about how educators can ensure each child receives the time and support needed to achieve success. This virtual workshop is designed for school teams who have started RTI but are still refining processes or experiencing challenges. The presenter has worked with hundreds of schools throughout North America and can help your school make RTI efficient\, effective\, and equitable. RTI work must be divided between collaborative teacher teams and two schoolwide teams (a leadership team and an intervention team). Together\, the entire school assumes responsibility for the learning of every student. \nAs an active virtual participant\, you will learn why bureaucratic\, paperwork-heavy\, compliance-oriented\, test-score-driven approaches fail\, and then discover how to create an RTI model that works. Acquire four essential guiding principles—collective responsibility\, concentrated instruction\, convergent assessment\, and certain access—and experience a simple process for bringing these principles to life in your school. \n\nDrive implementation using the four guiding principles.\nCreate a school leadership team to steer the shift to a culture of collective responsibility.\nUtilize collaborative teacher teams to define essential learnings.\nCreate a toolbox of effective interventions.\nBuild a schoolwide intervention team to address complex issues such as motivation\, attendance\, and behavior.\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Overcoming the Achievement Gap Trap
DESCRIPTION:Overcoming the Achievement Gap Trap Virtual Workshop: A Live 2-Day Event with Anthony Muhammad\nIn light of the mass movement for reform and fair treatment in the criminal justice system sparked by the death of George Floyd\, this workshop is more important than ever. A fairer and more equitable school system can be the catalyst for producing a better world outside of the school system. \nThis virtual workshop will address the connection between educator mindset and student achievement gaps. The achievement gap topic has been explored through many lenses\, including political\, economic\, and pedagogical. Despite these sincere efforts\, student achievement gaps in American schools are as large as they have ever been. Dr. Muhammad’s theory is that none of these well-intentioned policies or strategies will have a fighting chance in an environment where the educators possess a Superiority or Victim mindset. A Liberation mindset is the key to unlock the potential of our staff and students. \nThe workshop experience will include examining current constructs and the mistakes of the past. Once we have confronted the mistakes of the past\, we will start to examine our current reality and make concrete plans to create a Liberation mindset at our school. We recommend that the school send a diverse group of representatives\, which could include teacher leaders\, counselors\, school administrators\, and a district office representative. \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nUnderstand the facts about the American achievement gap and the factors and conditions that create it.\nRecognize the power of educator mindset on professional practice and student performance.\nExperience how to assess the current mindset of your school or district.\nCreate and learn how to apply a comprehensive school plan to transform your school into a Liberation mindset.\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Gateways to Success in STEM: Sketching and Spatial Visualization
DESCRIPTION:Spatial visualization (SV) is the ability to think in 3D. Did you know that up to 60% of students in STEM programs have weak SV skills? This skills gap can lead to difficulty in engineering\, technology\, and science classes which require proficiency with 3D thinking. Thankfully\, studies have shown that SV skills are teachable and improve student outcomes in STEM fields. SV training is especially beneficial for women and other underrepresented populations that may have had less experience in playing with building toys as children and find themselves at a disadvantage when entering STEM fields. \nSketching 2D and 3D shapes is the recommended approach to improving SV skills. Sketching is also important for creativity\, project-based learning\, and teamwork. However\, few curricula include this training\, and many educators don’t know where to begin. \nIn this edWebinar\, attendees will learn: \n\nBest practices for how to easily incorporate SV and sketching training into any STEM class\nHow student persistence can be measured and increased with sketching assignments\nHow teachers can improve their own SV skills without learning CAD\nHow the Spatial Vis software\, which is free for teachers\, teaches SV with engaging sketching assignments\, automatic grading\, and personalized feedback\n\nThis edWebinar will be of interest to teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, CTE directors\, and STEM coordinators and teachers at the middle school\, high school\, and higher education levels. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nLelli Van Den Einde\, Ph.D. is a teaching professor in structural engineering at the University of California San Diego and Co-founder and President of eGrove Education. She incorporates integrated pedagogical innovations such as peer instruction\, flipped classroom\, and project-based learning into core structural engineering courses; prepares and advises next-generation faculty; advises student organizations; and is committed to activities that broaden the participation of underrepresented groups in STEM and foster a supportive environment for diverse students. Her research focuses on engagement strategies for large classrooms and developing K-16 curricula in earthquake engineering and spatial visualization. \n\nLizzy Cowan has a cognitive science background and is the user experience researcher and designer at eGrove Education\, Inc. She has been developing spatial visualization and sketching products for seven years and has a deep understanding of the unique challenges students face when learning these skills. She focuses on creating an engaging and personalized learning experience for students and valuable resources for educators. Additionally\, she provides sales and technical support to instructors using the Spatial Vis software in their classrooms. \n\nTo participate in the live edWebinar\, log in with current version of Google Chrome or install the meeting app prior to the edWebinar on your computer\, your Apple device\, or Android device.  If you have a firewall in your location\, you can participate on your mobile device using your cellular data (not your local network). \nRegister

SUMMARY:Purposeful Read Alouds in Middle Grades
DESCRIPTION:Read Aloud is no longer a time for children to settle down after recess and listen in\na passive manner. Instead\, it is a time for the reading community to come together\nand think together around a common book. During the course of the school year\, a\nclass can experience 6-10 chapter books together while still allowing time for other\nelements of literacy instruction. In this session\, we’ll examine why it’s important\nthat these books be carefully chosen and what routines you can put in place for\nstudents to grow as readers\, knowing they each may access the common text in a\ndifferent way. \n  \nRegister

SUMMARY:Purposeful Read Alouds in Middle Grades
DESCRIPTION:These one-hour virtual sessions take a deep dive into a specific topic. Each session will include an introduction to the topic\, some connected readings\, time for conversation and questions. Participants will leave with some new thinking and some resources to expand their thinking following the session. Note: Sessions are provided at no cost for member districts. The opportunity for continued individual conversation/coaching is available for a fee. Purposeful Read Alouds in Middle Grades. Read Aloud is no longer a time for children to settle down after recess and listen in a passive manner. Instead\, it is a time for the reading community to come together and think together around a common book. During the course of the school year\, a class can experience 6-10 chapter books together while still allowing time for other elements of literacy instruction. It is important that these books be carefully chosen and that there are routines in place for students to grow as readers\, knowing they each may access the common text in a different way. A zoom link will be emailed to registrants. Questions about the content? Please contact Jill Reinhart at Jill.Reinhart@escco.org. Questions about registration? Please contact Jessica Seymour at Jessica.Seymour@escco.org. SUMMARY:Returning to Rigorous Mathematics\, Part 2: Strengthening Student Thinking with the Practice and Process Standards
DESCRIPTION:As students return to a hopefully more typical school year\, learning is likely to be anything but typical. Student and teacher experiences over the past 18 months have varied greatly and classrooms are filled with students representing a wider range of learning needs than ever before. The challenge for teachers is to help each student move their mathematics learning forward. While it will take time for most students to return to typical “on-grade-level” expectations\, we must support students to move forward rather than picking up instruction where “regular school” left off in March 2020. Responding to this wide range of learners is part of the job in education; the pandemic has made this part of the work more prominent in many classrooms. \nIn this second edWebinar of a two-part series\, Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D. will share tasks and strategies for continuing to emphasize the mathematical practice and process standards while teaching grade-appropriate content. More open-ended tasks provide opportunities for students to apply mathematics in a variety of settings and develop their skills around representing mathematical ideas and arguments. These tasks also provide contexts for the accelerated learning introduced in part one of the series. Join Sara to explore instructional strategies and tasks to develop the practices while emphasizing current content. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to teachers and school and district leaders at the elementary level. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \nReturning to Rigorous Mathematics\, Part 1: Using Spaced Practice to Accelerate Learning \n\nAbout the Presenter \nSara Delano Moore\, Ph.D. serves as Vice President for Content and Research and Chair of the Mathematics Advisory Board at ORIGO Education. A fourth-generation educator\, Sara’s work emphasizes the power of deep understanding and multiple representations for learning mathematics. Her interests include building mathematical comprehension and operation sense\, incorporating high-quality literature into mathematics instruction\, and connecting mathematics with engineering design and computational thinking. Sara has served as a classroom teacher of mathematics and science\, a mathematics teacher educator at the University of Kentucky\, Director of the Kentucky Center for Middle School Academic Achievement\, and Director of Mathematics & Science at ETA Hand2Mind. She has authored numerous articles in professional journals and is a co-author of the Mathematize It! series of books. She is also a member of the Visible Learning for Mathematics writing team\, including two volumes of the Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom series.
