SUMMARY:Ready For Reading: Preparing Elementary Teachers for Their Most Important Job
DESCRIPTION:The recording will be posted on this page after the live session. Closed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more. \nTeaching a child how to read is the single most important job of an elementary school teacher\, as third-grade reading proficiency marks a critical juncture in a child’s success in later grades and has implications for future life outcomes. However\, particularly troubling survey findings from the EdWeek Research Center indicate only 11% of elementary teachers felt completely prepared to teach reading at the conclusion of their pre-service preparation. What is the quality of early reading instruction in teacher preparation? \nIn this edWebinar\, join Kate Walsh\, President of the National Council on Teacher Quality\, alongside Terrie Noland of Learning Ally\, for an illuminating look into major trends in teacher preparation\, the slow-going uptake of reading instruction aligned to the evidence\, and the imperative need for quality pre-service instruction for educators. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to researchers\, reading advocates\, prospective teachers\, current teachers\, and leaders in the field of teacher education. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \nAbout the Presenter \nKate Walsh has served as the president of the National Council on Teacher Quality since 2003. Driven by the belief that relevant\, broadly accessible\, comparative data can transform teacher quality\, Kate has spearheaded efforts to instill greater transparency and higher standards among those institutions that exert influence and authority over teachers: states\, districts\, and teacher preparation programs. Notably\, she produced the first-ever report card on the quality of the nation’s teacher preparation programs. A relentless advocate for equitable access to great teachers\, Kate’s work has been widely featured in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, USA Today\, NPR\, and PBS NewsHour\, among others. \nPreviously\, Kate worked as a program officer with The Abell Foundation in Baltimore\, as well as the Baltimore City Public Schools and the Core Knowledge Foundation. Among her accomplishments\, she started and ran an innovative boarding school located in Kenya\, East Africa serving middle-school-age boys facing significant challenges in their school and home lives. A long-time resident of Baltimore\, Kate and her husband have four grown children now scattered across the globe. \nAbout the Moderator \nListen. Learn. Teach. It’s that simple. Terrie Noland uses this philosophy as an innovator and a motivator\, and it’s evident as she leads\, coaches and mentors thousands of K-12 educators about the science of reading each year. She has a unique perspective on the need to unify all stakeholders around a vision for education to smash the reading divide for the millions of struggling readers. Her daily mission is to add value to educators to help influence transformational changes in school districts across the country by addressing the needs of marginalized students. Terrie seeks to share her expertise and passion to encourage and to illuminate a path towards success and measurable outcomes. \nIf you looked at Terrie’s resume\, you would be confused. Her undergraduate and graduate degree work placed her in the field of criminal justice. However\, it was through continuous listening and learning that led her on a journey in education starting out in preschool teaching and administration\, then becoming a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) and earning a Ph.D. in literacy and educational leadership from St. John’s University. Terrie is also a John Maxwell certified speaker and coach. \nAs Vice President of Educator Initiatives at Learning Ally\, Terrie works to ignite enthusiasm and excitement by building champion educators and administrators on creating cultures of literacy and learning. \nRegister:

SUMMARY:Instructional Implementations of Interventions That Address Today’s Diverse Classroom
DESCRIPTION:The recording will be posted on this page after the live session. Closed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nThe learning loss as a result of the pandemic is no longer hypothetical. All students have been affected and educators are facing a larger number of students who need in-classroom interventions. This urgency requires all educators to find the right solutions that can address this gap knowing that: \n\nAll students have been affected in some way\nMath and reading learning have seen the largest declines in scores\nStudents who were one to two years behind have even larger instructional gaps\nProven solutions that can be implemented in the classroom in flexible ways have to be considered for students to catch up\n\nIn this edWebinar\, join Dr. Bonnie Cochran\, Dr. Tonya Clarke\, Jay Hillman\, and Dr. Jessica Talada to hear what other district leaders from around the country are implementing in anticipation of the wider range of learning needs teachers will be facing this school year. The presenters will be exploring the best ways to select evidence-based solutions\, designing flexible implementation models\, and supporting teachers for accelerated student learning. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to teachers and school and district leaders of the middle and high school levels. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Bonnie Cochran is HMH Director of Academic Planning and Analytics. SUMMARY:Response to Intervention at Work
DESCRIPTION:Proven techniques to close learning gaps\nRTI is not a series of implementation steps to cross off on a list\, but a way of thinking about how educators can ensure each child receives the time and support needed to achieve success. This virtual workshop is designed for school teams who have started RTI but are still refining processes or experiencing challenges. The presenter has worked with hundreds of schools throughout North America and can help your school make RTI efficient\, effective\, and equitable. RTI work must be divided between collaborative teacher teams and two schoolwide teams (a leadership team and an intervention team). Together\, the entire school assumes responsibility for the learning of every student. \nAs an active virtual participant\, you will learn why bureaucratic\, paperwork-heavy\, compliance-oriented\, test-score-driven approaches fail\, and then discover how to create an RTI model that works. Acquire four essential guiding principles—collective responsibility\, concentrated instruction\, convergent assessment\, and certain access—and experience a simple process for bringing these principles to life in your school. \n\nDrive implementation using the four guiding principles.\nCreate a school leadership team to steer the shift to a culture of collective responsibility.\nUtilize collaborative teacher teams to define essential learnings.\nCreate a toolbox of effective interventions.\nBuild a schoolwide intervention team to address complex issues such as motivation\, attendance\, and behavior.\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Teaching Twice-Exceptional Learners in Today's Classroom
DESCRIPTION:This specialized learning session in gifted education meets the following competencies outlined by The Ohio Department of Education: \n\nProvide an extension or replacement of the general education curricula\, to modify the learning process through strategies such as curriculum compacting\, and to select alternative assignments and projects based on individual student needs\nUnderstand the social and emotional needs of students who are gifted and to address the impact of those needs on student learning.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImportant Session Information:\n\nTwice-exceptional (2e) learners have often been misunderstood\, disciplined\, unchallenged\, and left behind. They’re called lazy and unmotivated. But they’re not: a diagnosis such as a learning disability\, ADHD\, autism spectrum disorder\, or anxiety masks their giftedness. Or their giftedness blocks educators from seeing their struggles. \nOften\, educators don’t have the tools to meet their needs. Emily Kirchner-Morris\, in her book Teaching Twice-Exceptional Learners in Today’s Classroom helps bridge that gap. In this self-paced book study participants will explore real life stories and examples to better understand and/or implement: \n• How giftedness and disability intersect \n• Strategies for supporting the specific needs of 2E learners \n• Interventions based on the various labels or diagnoses 2Elearners may have \n• The strengths and struggles that come with each exceptionality \n• Information that will help determine the appropriate services\, accommodations\, modifications\, and collaborations with other educational professionals through Section 504 plans or IEPs

SUMMARY:Christmas for the Preborn
DESCRIPTION:Christmas for the Preborn\, a one-hour ceremony of song and prayer\, fellowship\, hot apple cider\, and cookies\, which commemorates the lives of preborn babies lost through elective abortion\, is held each year\, during the Advent season in front of the Women’s Med Center abortion mill at 1401 East Stroop Road in Kettering. \nPlan to attend on Wednesday\, Dec. 15th\, 11 am – Noon\nDuring the hour-long event\, highlighted by young people reading the Christmas story from the Book of Luke\, we mourn the loss of the brief lives of those who were aborted during the year and we honor them – and reflect on our loss\, because they would have touched us and others in their own special way. And in the sad almost half-century of legalized abortion\, we’re already missing generations of babies that would have been born to those who were lost through elective abortion. \nIn addition\, we celebrate life with gifts\, which are distributed to local women’s resource and support centers. Each year we ask people to donate disposable diapers – sizes 4\, 5 and 6 – and baby wipes as gifts. We estimate that local support centers distribute over 100\,000 diapers a year\, and demand keeps growing. These centers do a marvelous job for women in crisis situations and provide a variety of services\, including free pregnancy tests\, counseling\, maternity and baby clothing\, post-abortion support\, ultrasounds\, support classes\, parent training\, referrals for community resources\, and medical and social services. They rely on private donations and deserve all the support we can give them.

SUMMARY:Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum
DESCRIPTION:Learn the components of the English language that contribute to the development of reading.\nLearn about the phonology\, orthography and structure of the English language while taking a comprehensive look at how students learn to read and write.\nPlan and implement systematic\, explicit\, multisensory language instruction that meets the guidelines of the National Reading Panel and has been proven to be most effective in teaching students with Dyslexia and other reading difficulties.\nLearn how to incorporate Orton-Gillingham (OG) methodology into their core and intervention reading programs.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImportant Session Information:\n\nThe Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I Online encompasses 16 weeks of instruction\, including 45 hours of lecture and a 16-hour practicum. The course focuses on the phonology\, orthography and structure of the English language; takes a comprehensive look at how students learn to read and write; and helps teachers to recognize the characteristics of learning disabilities. \nWhat makes Hamilton County ESC’s program unique is the practicum: each participant is assigned to a Master Teacher who provides one-to-one coaching and feedback on the creation and teaching of 16 lesson plans custom-tailored for the student the participant is tutoring during the course. Master Teachers will make 12 visits to the participants schools to observe their instruction\, enabling instructors to give specific feedback at point of need on both planning and implementation of OG methodology.
