SUMMARY:Designing Effective and Equitable Online and Blended Learning Experiences
DESCRIPTION:The emerging emphasis on distance and blended learning has left many educators grappling with how to transfer effective face-to-face teaching practices to online learning environments. In addition\, educators have scrambled to acquire new skill sets in order to support learners using technologies designed to engage students across a variety of learning modalities (e.g.\, flipped\, fully remote\, and more). \n\n\nIn this workshop with Eric Carbaugh and Kristina Doubet\, we will explore a more comprehensive framework for meeting the needs of all learners during remote and blended/hybrid learning experiences. Specifically\, we will investigate opportunities for students to 1) foster authentic connections with their teachers and their peers\, 2) show what they’ve learned and receive feedback to foster growth\, and 3) engage in authentic learning in diverse ways. \n\n\nThrough the lens of differentiated instruction\, participants in this interactive workshop will investigate how to plan for virtual blended learning experience\, as well as how to select and use technology tools to connect students with each other\, with their teacher\, and with content-effective practices for all learning environments. \n\n\nLearning Outcomes: \n\n\nParticipants will \n\n\n\n\nExplore high-impact technology tools that promote engagement\, connection\, and interaction. \n\n\n\n\nEvaluate the use of a variety of technologies for community building\, formative assessment\, feedback\, and engagement. \n\n\n\n\nAnalyze the relationship between equity and online and blended learning. \n\n\n\n\nPlan lessons for virtual and blended instruction using technology tools in order to foster connection\, engagement\, and understanding.

SUMMARY:Learning to Love Math: How to Engage and Motivate Students to Build and Sustain Math Understanding\, Effort\, and Enjoyment: A Deeper Dive
DESCRIPTION:How can you guide students to build math concept networks that require deep\, accurate understanding? In this workshop with Judy Willis\, we’ll explore the information described in the mini-workshop “Learning to Love Math” with a deeper dive. \n\n\nWe’ll first examine strategies to reduce the stress that blocks participation and understanding. Additional insights come from the whys and ways to facilitate passage of the sensory input of new learning into short-term memory encoding. And as we recognize the effect of patterning on learning\, and memory in general\, we’ll explore ways to promote students’ understanding math as parts of a pattern. \n\n\nWith the goal of transferring knowledge beyond drills and applying them to applications\, we’ll discuss interventions to boost understanding. You’ll explore examples of a variety of mental manipulations (e.g.\, student meaning-making) that promote the construction of conceptual understanding and durable long-term memory networks. \n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\nParticipants will \n\n\n\n\nDevelop deep understanding of the effects of emotion\, stress\, and math negativity on math success\, as well as interventions for these problems. \n\n\n\n\nEvaluate and apply strategies for foundational/fact information that must be that be memorized. \n\n\n\n\nRecognize ways to use patterning power for all memory development and concept constructions. \n\n\n\n\nExplore what current brain research tell us about the most effective approaches for math skill acquisition and concept development. \n\n\n\n\nFeel sustained and encouraged as you help your students love math. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Ed Tech Essentials for Secondary Educators
DESCRIPTION:In a world awash in technology\, what EdTech skills and strategies should educators focus on to ensure they are making the best use of online spaces for classroom learning? This workshop will include an overview of three technology strategies essential for all learning environments. \n\n\nThe first session in the series will examine ways to curate resources. In this session\, we’ll explore how to pull together resources that connect to curriculum goals while supporting the needs of all students. \n\n\nThe second session in this series will examine how to use technology to assess and pivot instruction. This session will cover strategies for collecting and analyzing data so educators can take action through instructional pivots and interventions. \n\n\nThe third session in this series will examine strategies to support students as they create products of learning. We will look at how to develop the supporting resources necessary for everyday artifacts of student learning as well as for larger independent and collaborative projects. \n\n\nAll three sessions include interactive activities that model student experiences. \n\n\nLearning Outcomes \n\n\nParticipants will: \n\n\n\n\nLearn how to curate resources that align to curriculum goals and differentiated instruction needs; \n\n\n\n\nLearn how to check for understanding with digital tools to take action based on formative assessment data; \n\n\n\n\nLearn how to facilitate creative experiences for students to demonstrate their learning. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Using Interactive\, Differentiated Strategies to Engage and Equip ALL Learners (Four-part series)
DESCRIPTION:Tailoring instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners is difficult enough in face-to-face settings\, let alone in the digital world. The recent challenges that accompany oscillating learning environments have shone a spotlight on the varying needs of students\, leaving many teachers wondering if it’s possible to move all students forward while attending to their different learning needs. \n\n\nThis series of four interactive workshops led by Kristina Doubet will feature tools—both traditional and digital—that can help teachers engage\, support\, and challenge diverse learners in a variety of learning settings. Participants will experiment with tools and strategies\, study classroom examples\, and “meet” with colleagues to discuss how they might engage\, support\, and challenge every learner to take their next steps. \n\n\n\n\nSession 1: Creating a Collaborative\, Supportive\, Interactive Learning Environment \n\n\n\n\nSession 2: Strategies to Harness Interests and Learning Preferences \n\n\n\n\nSession 3: Strategies to Differentiate for Readiness \n\n\n\n\nSession 4: Flexible Grouping and Classroom (or Online) Management \nRegister

SUMMARY:Elevating Professional Learning Through Microcredentials
DESCRIPTION:Far too often\, professional learning focuses on compliance (e.g.\, checking off another box or earning “hours”) rather than strengthening and demonstrating skills that affect student learning. Those participating in these more compliance-oriented professional learning activities may gain knowledge\, but evidence suggests that this knowledge is unlikely to transfer into practice. Microcredentials\, at their best\, can help bridge this gap by providing educators with opportunities to take action and then reflect on the effect of that action. \n\n\nA microcredential is defined as a performance-based assessment intended to allow the educator to demonstrate competency in a skill. If well-designed\, microcredentials also align with what we know works in professional learning. Microcredentials are job-embedded\, sustained\, and relevant learning experiences that are focused on student outcomes. Educators completing microcredentials must document evidence of proficiency in the context of their work. \n\n\nIn this interactive workshop\, Eric Carbaugh will provide essential information and lessons learned for schools and districts seeking to implement microcredentials. Key topics addressed include deciding whether to adopt existing microcredentials or design your own\, tips for design and implementation\, and an overview of the structures and supports necessary for success. \n\n\nLearning Outcomes: \n\n\nParticipants will \n\n\n\n\nIdentify how microcredentials can support school or district goals as well as individual educator growth. \n\n\n\n\nUnderstand ways in which microcredentials reflect high-quality professional learning. \n\n\n\n\nExplore essential components of design and implementation. \n\n\n\n\nDevelop a plan for implementing microcredentials. \n\n \n\nRegister
