SUMMARY:Back-to-School: The Power of Hands-On Math Games
DESCRIPTION:With back-to-school season approaching\, teachers are preparing for a new group of students with a new range of math ability levels. The search is on for engaging tasks to revisit prior learning\, as well as formative assessment options to determine students’ math strengths and needs. Formative assessment is rarely associated with fun\, but what if we could gather assessment data during math games that are enjoyable and interactive? And\, even better\, what if the games prompt students to revisit previously learned skills and concepts at the start of a new school year? During this free webinar\, we will explore the use of hands-on math games with manipulatives to revisit prior learning and gather information about students’ strengths and needs. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Show Me What to Do: Using Visuals to Teach Social Skills and Emotional Literacy in Early Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nShare. Trade. Calm down. Take your turn. Tell me how you are feeling. Give him a turn. \nHaving the skills to work and play together and identify and regulate emotions makes a big difference in the early childhood classroom\, and many children enter classroom settings with these skills still emerging. Rather than reacting to behavior challenges\, educators can proactively provide instruction\, visual supports\, and playful learning experiences to build children’s toolbox of skills\, literally and figuratively. \nIn this edWebinar\, Lindsay N. Giroux will support attendees to shift their teaching of social skills and emotional literacy from incidental to intentional instruction. Using easy-to-make visual supports\, attendees will be guided through a framework for planning robust instruction of key skills for understanding oneself and others. Attendees will practice the steps of planning and note modifications for the children they serve. \nThis edWebinar will benefit early childhood teachers\, early childhood instructional coaches\, and other related service providers working with young children. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nLindsay N. Giroux\, M.Ed. specializes in coaching preschool teachers on implementing the Pyramid Model to promote social-emotional development and prevent challenging behavior. She is a contributing author of Connect4LearningⓇ\, a PreK curriculum\, and the ChooseFi Pre-K Financial Literacy Curriculum. Her professional interests include teacher training\, social-skill instruction\, and inclusion of preschoolers with special needs. Lindsay received a B.A. from Wellesley College and an M.Ed. in early childhood special education from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. She is currently the Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (SEFEL) coordinator for the Wake County Public School System and a North Carolina Preschool Pyramid Model Expert Coach. She resides in Raleigh\, NC\, with her husband and son.

SUMMARY:Shift from Deficit Thinking to a Strength-Based Approach in Education: The Time is Now
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nFor too long\, the field of education has focused on what’s wrong—with students\, with staff\, and even with parents. This deficit thinking has created a powerful—and harmful—narrative within education that seems too enormous to shift away from. But this shift is possible. \nIn this insightful and thought-provoking edWebinar\, presenter Byron McClure\, Ed.D. will discuss the impact of deficit thinking on students and the need for educators to shift this narrative for more positive and successful student outcomes. Attendees will: \n\nIdentify the harmful patterns caused by deficit thinking\nLearn to self-reflect and self-correct\nBe inspired and energized to begin practically implementing a strength-based approach\, both professionally and personally\n\nNow\, more than ever\, is the time to shift away from what’s wrong to what’s strong in education. This edWebinar will be of interest to teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, education technology leaders\, and school counselors and psychologists at all grade levels. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Byron McClure is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and the founder of Lessons For SEL\, where he uses research and human-centered design thinking to build empathy\, ideate\, co-create solutions\, and design equitable resources that put the needs of children front and center. He formerly served as the assistant director of school redesign at a high school in Southeast\, D.C.\, where he was responsible for leading and reimagining what social-emotional learning looked like within an inner-city community. \n\nDriven by a passion to advocate for the education needs of all learners\, Aleasha Stevens draws from a combined 25 years of experience as a leader in both the classroom and the boardroom to shepherd complex initiatives through to completion and develop scalable programs that can be easily replicated in diverse educational settings through her superior communication skills and proven ability to build collaborative teams across and beyond organizational boundaries.

SUMMARY:Urge Congress to Pass the Afghan Adjustment Act
DESCRIPTION:It has been one year since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the harrowing scenes that captivated the world as aircraft rushed to depart its capital city of Kabul. Tens of thousands of Afghan nationals have now been resettled in communities across the United States\, many of whom served alongside U.S. servicemembers. They are now in need of a legal pathway to real and lasting safety. They need the Afghan Adjustment Act.  \nMost Afghans arrived with humanitarian parole\, which only allows someone to remain in the United States for a temporary duration. Currently\, the only pathway available to most of those relocated to the United States is asylum\, a complex and paperwork-intensive process with years-long processing backlogs. In order to make a successful asylum claim\, these Afghans will be asked to provide proof of their likely persecution if returned to Afghanistan—because of their work with Americans or international aid groups\, because of their efforts to report the truth about conditions on the ground\, because of their support for democratic values and human rights\, or because of other acts not tolerated by the Taliban. Documents that demonstrate this are the same ones that Afghans were advised to destroy in order to escape or elude the Taliban in the days that preceded the fall of Kabul.  \nThe bipartisan Afghan Adjustment Act (S. 4787/H.R. 8685)\, patterned after similar laws\, including legislation enacted after the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam\, provides an important correction by allowing recently resettled Afghans to apply to become lawful permanent residents\, the same status they would have received had they been admitted through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.  \nThe national resettlement agencies of the United States\, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)\, together with its Catholic Charities partners and other community-based organizations\, have been hard at work during the past year\, helping Afghans settle into their new homes. The task of helping Afghans to file asylum applications would fall to these same organizations and legal services providers\, which are already stretched thin. For these reasons\, the Afghan Adjustment Act would benefit not only the Afghans themselves but also the organizations serving them and federal agencies such as U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services\, which lacks the resources to accurately process tens of thousands of asylum applications in a timely manner. \nAs Bishop Mario Dorsonville\, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Migration\, said in a recent letter to Congress\, “it is both our moral duty and in our country’s best interest to provide our new Afghan neighbors with a pathway to permanent legal status.”  \n  \n \nResources: \n\nRead the recent press release from the USCCB discussing the Afghan Adjustment Act.\nView the text of the Afghan Adjustment Act\, as introduced in the Senate.\nView a section-by-section breakdown of the bill.\nThe National Immigration Forum has also created a summary of the bill.\nFor more information about our new Afghan neighbors and the need for passing the Afghan Adjustment Act\, view the Justice for Immigrants backgrounder.\n\nPray for integration of all newcomers.

SUMMARY:Allow Dreamers to Take Part in Building Our Country’s Future
DESCRIPTION:During this year’s National Migration Week\, I join with my fellow Catholics and others of good will across the United States in urging Congress to enact legislation that would promote the full integration of Dreamers before the 117th Congress ends.  \nDreamers are among those living on the existential peripheries of our society\, but the common good requires that they be embraced\, not least of all because of their daily contributions. I am especially concerned about those currently protected by DACA because of ongoing litigation and its consequences for them\, their families\, their employers\, and communities depending on them. \nI am grateful for bipartisan passage of the American Dream and Promise Act by the House of Representatives last year. All of Congress must do its part to provide certainty to Dreamers\, as well as the families\, employers\, and communities depending on them. As Pope Francis reminds us\, “We cannot leave to future generations the burden of responsibility for decisions that need to be made now.” \n       Please prioritize the passage of legislation providing Dreamers with a pathway to\npermanent legal status and citizenship. \n\nClick this link to log in and send your message \n
