SUMMARY:Purposeful Read Alouds in Middle Grades
DESCRIPTION:These one-hour virtual sessions take a deep dive into a specific topic. Each session will include an introduction to the topic\, some connected readings\, time for conversation and questions. Participants will leave with some new thinking and some resources to expand their thinking following the session. Note: Sessions are provided at no cost for member districts. The opportunity for continued individual conversation/coaching is available for a fee. Purposeful Read Alouds in Middle Grades. Read Aloud is no longer a time for children to settle down after recess and listen in a passive manner. Instead\, it is a time for the reading community to come together and think together around a common book. During the course of the school year\, a class can experience 6-10 chapter books together while still allowing time for other elements of literacy instruction. It is important that these books be carefully chosen and that there are routines in place for students to grow as readers\, knowing they each may access the common text in a different way. SUMMARY:Returning to Rigorous Mathematics\, Part 2: Strengthening Student Thinking with the Practice and Process Standards
DESCRIPTION:As students return to a hopefully more typical school year\, learning is likely to be anything but typical. Student and teacher experiences over the past 18 months have varied greatly and classrooms are filled with students representing a wider range of learning needs than ever before. The challenge for teachers is to help each student move their mathematics learning forward. While it will take time for most students to return to typical “on-grade-level” expectations\, we must support students to move forward rather than picking up instruction where “regular school” left off in March 2020. Responding to this wide range of learners is part of the job in education; the pandemic has made this part of the work more prominent in many classrooms. \nIn this second edWebinar of a two-part series\, Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D. will share tasks and strategies for continuing to emphasize the mathematical practice and process standards while teaching grade-appropriate content. She has degrees in sociology and elementary education and a master’s degree in education. Her extensive experience also includes teaching first grade and working as a literacy coach and reading specialist. Stacy is the co-author of a foundational literacy program and is also the chief education officer at Reading Horizons\, an educational software company that teaches structured literacy concepts through a blended software and direct instruction approach. Stacy is passionate about literacy and believes that learning how to read well is a civil right. \n\nDonell Pons has a husband and several children with dyslexia. When Donell discovered her son had dyslexia and was struggling to find appropriate services\, she went back to school and received a dual MED and MAT in teaching and learning with a special education certification\, none of which addressed dyslexia. Donell has taught secondary language arts and worked at a charter school focusing on supporting students on the autism spectrum. Donell is trained in multiple structured literacy-based reading methods. She was the literacy and reading coordinator and ELL director at a public charter school and her efforts to implement a comprehensive literacy program there were featured in Language Magazine\, October 2016 and MiddleWeb SmartBrief. Donell has produced a nationally recognized three-part webcast series on teaching reading and recognizing dyslexia and has had numerous articles in educational publications. Dr. Cochran consults with school and district leaders around issues related to data\, student achievement and strategic planning. She previously served the Paulding County School District in Dallas\, GA\, for 31 years\, in roles spanning from teacher to Associate Superintendent. She served as President of the Georgia Association of Curriculum and Instructional Supervisors and on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders. \n\nDr. Tonya Clarke\, Coordinator of K-12 Mathematics for Clayton County Public Schools\, has a prioritized focus on increasing achievement in mathematics for all students. As Founder of the I’m W.O.K.E. Project (Widening Options through Knowledge and Empowerment)\, Dr. Clarke and her team guide teachers through a process for developing and implementing culturally relevant and culturally sustaining mathematics instruction. These projects use highly accessible teaching practices that allow student involvement in creating mathematical models to analyze social\, economic\, environmental\, and political issues. Dr. Clarke has over 20 years of experience teaching and leading and has served in a variety of educational and community leadership roles. As a consultant to several educational organizations and through her service with the Georgia Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and the NAACP Clayton County\, Dr. Clarke continues to promote critical consciousness through mathematics instruction. Her passion for equalizing the learning environment motivates her to empower educators to make math matter for every student every day. \nJay Hillman is the director of educational services for Elmira City School District. He and his team have grown their systemic approach to literacy instruction over the last five years. Having just closed out an Innovative Approaches to Literacy grant for the prek–2 grades\, they were awarded another round to complete professional learning and systems for grades 7–12. Even through school closures and the pandemic\, their students showed amazing growth. \n\nDr. Jessica Talada serves as a literacy & intervention coordinator in the Elmira City School District in Elmira\, New York. She is a 23-year veteran of public education\, serving as a classroom teacher\, reading specialist\, instructional support teacher and data and curriculum coordinator in a wide span of grade levels. Dr. Talada is also an adjunct professor at Elmira College and Liberty University. She teaches graduate courses in literacy and education. For the past 5 years\, his main focus has been to introduce students to the concepts of creative thinking\, problem-solving\, and acquiring 21st-century skills\nthrough project-based learning (PBL). \nBefore coming to Aldine ISD\, he spent more than 30 years as an Electrical Engineer in the oil and gas industry where he designed high-speed data acquisition systems for major oil companies. \nHe holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering Technology from the University of Houston\, Texas\, and a M.Ed. in STEM Curriculum & Instruction from Concordia University in Portland\, Oregon. \nAbout the Moderator \nRita Ferrandino has built an international reputation as one of the most effective strategists and coalition-builders in the education entrepreneurship community. She loves finding frogs and climbing through the trees with her four boys. \nDr. Suzanne Levenson Goldstein is an online instructor for the College of General Studies at University of Phoenix. She received a BA from University of California\, Los Angeles\, an MA from California State University\, Los Angeles\, and an Ed.D. from California Lutheran University. She taught elementary school for over 30 years and loose parts was an integral part of her kindergarten through third-grade classrooms. Dr. Levenson Goldstein was also the early childhood education coordinator and the language arts mentor for the school district. She earned the school district’s Teacher of the Month award and the local television station’s Crystal Apple Award. Dr. Levenson Goldstein and her co-authors have had several research articles published in the area of loose parts and the benefits of tree climbing.
