SUMMARY:No More Delay:  Positive Immigration Reform Needed Today
DESCRIPTION:American Catholics have been working toward immigration reform for decades\, and it’s long overdue. The 117th Congress now has an opportunity to address immigration in a positive\, productive\, and forward-looking way. Last week\, the Senate adopted a budget resolution that paves the way for a reconciliation bill. The resolution includes instructions for the Committee on the Judiciary to draft language providing “lawful permanent status for qualified immigrants.” Reconciliation only requires a simple majority of 51 votes in the Senate\, assuming certain other conditions are met. This was the same mechanism used to pass the American Rescue Plan in March. With the budget resolution adopted in the Senate—which the House will also have to adopt in the coming weeks—Senate committees can now begin drafting the text of the budget reconciliation bill itself. \n  \nClick here for more information and to Take Action! \n

SUMMARY:Gateways to Success in STEM:  Sketching and Spatial Visualization
DESCRIPTION:Spatial visualization (SV) is the ability to think in 3D. Did you know that up to 60% of students in STEM programs have weak SV skills? This skills gap can lead to difficulty in engineering\, technology\, and science classes which require proficiency with 3D thinking. Thankfully\, studies have shown that SV skills are teachable and improve student outcomes in STEM fields. SV training is especially beneficial for women and other underrepresented populations that may have had less experience in playing with building toys as children and find themselves at a disadvantage when entering STEM fields. \nSketching 2D and 3D shapes is the recommended approach to improving SV skills. Sketching is also important for creativity\, project-based learning\, and teamwork. She has worked on numerous research and development projects focusing on reading for English learners funded by the U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences\, the U.S. Department of Labor\, and collaborated with Harvard and the Center for Applied Linguistics on a longitudinal study funded by the NICHD. \nThe Carnegie Corporation of New York funded her five-year empirical study to develop Expediting Reading Comprehension for English Language Learners (ExC-ELL)\, a comprehensive professional development model for grades 6–12 math\, science\, social studies\, and language arts teachers that integrates language\, literacy\, and content. In 2011\, Sue began working for Common Sense by providing support and training for educators and administrators on issues of digital culture and technology implementation. As a co-founder of Equity in Action CA\, she has facilitated conferences that recognize the importance of culture and identity and strive to amplify marginalized voices in the education technology space. Prior to Common Sense\, Sue was a researcher and educator. Sue holds a master’s degree in public health and an undergraduate degree in zoology and chemistry. \n  \nAbout the Moderator \nJennifer Ehehalt is the Pittsburgh regional senior educational program manager at Common Sense Education. Jennifer has over 20 years of experience in education. She has degrees in sociology and elementary education and a master’s degree in education. Her extensive experience also includes teaching first grade and working as a literacy coach and reading specialist. Stacy is the co-author of a foundational literacy program and is also the chief education officer at Reading Horizons\, an educational software company that teaches structured literacy concepts through a blended software and direct instruction approach. Stacy is passionate about literacy and believes that learning how to read well is a civil right. \n\nDonell Pons has a husband and several children with dyslexia. When Donell discovered her son had dyslexia and was struggling to find appropriate services\, she went back to school and received a dual MED and MAT in teaching and learning with a special education certification\, none of which addressed dyslexia. Donell has taught secondary language arts and worked at a charter school focusing on supporting students on the autism spectrum. Donell is trained in multiple structured literacy-based reading methods. She was the literacy and reading coordinator and ELL director at a public charter school and her efforts to implement a comprehensive literacy program there were featured in Language Magazine\, October 2016 and MiddleWeb SmartBrief. Donell has produced a nationally recognized three-part webcast series on teaching reading and recognizing dyslexia and has had numerous articles in educational publications. She is a member of Decoding Dyslexia Utah and helped compose the Utah State Dyslexia Handbook. She is currently working with adults in a workplace literacy program as well as supporting students with dyslexia in the transition to college. \n\nAbout the Moderator \nJeanette Beninati is a former educator with a strong background in strategic planning\, education technology and training\, and professional development. Her experience spans education\, technology\, assessment and instruction\, consulting\, training\, efficacy research\, and learning disabilities.
