In the fall of 2024, two important anniversaries will highlight the great contributions of African American Catholics in the Church. These anniversaries include: the 40th anniversary of the publication of, “What We Have Seen and Heard”, a pastoral letter published in 1984 by the six black American bishops at the time and the 20th anniversary of the death of black liturgical pioneer Fr. Clarence Joseph Rivers, of Cincinnati. These anniversaries will be celebrated with two local events.

  • On September 9, the feast of St. Peter Claver, a special Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Schnurr at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains.
  • A 3-day event is planned for Nov. 22-24. This will include a 2-day Academic Symposium at the University of Dayton and a celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the King on Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains with Wilton Cardinal Gregory presiding.
