SUMMARY:Connecting the Science of Reading to the Science of Learning for Equitable Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Connecting the Science of Reading to the Science of Learning for Equitable Outcomes\n\nWednesday\, January 19\, 2022 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm EST\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Linda Diamond\, M.Ed.\, Educator\, Author\, Speaker\, ConsultantModerated by Terrie Noland\, Ph.D.\, CALP\, Vice President\, Educator Initiatives\, Learning Ally \nSponsored by Learning Ally \nRegister Here \nRegister to attend live or to receive the recording. Closed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more. \nThis edWebinar will discuss merging the Science of Reading with the Science of Learning in order to marry the research with practical implications for teaching. The Science of Reading tells us what the research says are the critical components of learning to read while the Science of Learning\, grounded in cognitive science\, tells us how we learn. By joining these two sciences\, we can more readily understand how to teach so the vast majority of children become proficient readers. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders of the kindergarten through elementary grades. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nLinda Diamond is the founder and former president of Consortium on Reaching Excellence in Education (CORE)\, a professional learning organization that serves schools\, districts\, and state agencies to improve literacy and math achievement for all students. Linda is the author of three widely used professional books for educators\, Teaching Reading Sourcebook; Assessing Reading: Multiple Measures; and Vocabulary Handbook. Previously\, Linda served as a K-12 district administrator\, a middle school and elementary principal\, a high school teacher\, and a senior policy analyst in an education think tank. She is now spending part of her retirement working with curriculum publishers and selected non-profit organizations\, and focusing on improving literacy outcomes for all students. \n\nAbout the Moderator \nListen. Learn. Teach. It’s that simple. Terrie Noland uses this philosophy as an innovator and a motivator\, and it’s evident as she leads\, coaches and mentors thousands of K-12 educators about the science of reading each year. She has a unique perspective on the need to unify all stakeholders around a vision for education to smash the reading divide for the millions of struggling readers. Her daily mission is to add value to educators to help influence transformational changes in school districts across the country by addressing the needs of marginalized students. Terrie seeks to share her expertise and passion to encourage and to illuminate a path towards success and measurable outcomes. \nIf you looked at Terrie’s resume\, you would be confused. Her undergraduate and graduate degree work placed her in the field of criminal justice. However\, it was through continuous listening and learning that led her on a journey in education starting out in preschool teaching and administration\, then becoming a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) and earning a Ph.D. in literacy and educational leadership from St. John’s University. Terrie is also a John Maxwell certified speaker and coach. \nAs Vice President of Educator Initiatives at Learning Ally\, Terrie works to ignite enthusiasm and excitement by building champion educators and administrators on creating cultures of literacy and learning. \n\nTo participate in the live edWebinar\, log in with current version of Google Chrome or install the meeting app prior to the edWebinar on your computer\, your Apple device\, or Android device.  If you have a firewall in your location\, you can participate on your mobile device using your cellular data (not your local network). \nThe edWebinar recording will be posted to this page the day after the presentation. SUMMARY:Teaching Twice-Exceptional Learners in Today's Classroom
DESCRIPTION:This specialized learning session in gifted education meets the following competencies outlined by The Ohio Department of Education: \n\nProvide an extension or replacement of the general education curricula\, to modify the learning process through strategies such as curriculum compacting\, and to select alternative assignments and projects based on individual student needs\nUnderstand the social and emotional needs of students who are gifted and to address the impact of those needs on student learning.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImportant Session Information:\n\nTwice-exceptional (2e) learners have often been misunderstood\, disciplined\, unchallenged\, and left behind. They’re called lazy and unmotivated. But they’re not: a diagnosis such as a learning disability\, ADHD\, autism spectrum disorder\, or anxiety masks their giftedness. Or their giftedness blocks educators from seeing their struggles. \nOften\, educators don’t have the tools to meet their needs. Emily Kirchner-Morris\, in her book Teaching Twice-Exceptional Learners in Today’s Classroom helps bridge that gap. In this self-paced book study participants will explore real life stories and examples to better understand and/or implement: \n• How giftedness and disability intersect \n• Strategies for supporting the specific needs of 2E learners \n• Interventions based on the various labels or diagnoses 2Elearners may have \n• The strengths and struggles that come with each exceptionality \n• Information that will help determine the appropriate services\, accommodations\, modifications\, and collaborations with other educational professionals through Section 504 plans or IEPs
