Mark 6:31-44

Stewardship is a spiritual way of life in which we grow in gratitude for the many gifts and blessings entrusted to us and in our readiness to share those gifts with others. The U.S. Bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship notes that stewardship is the “disciple’s response” through which we learn to live more fully as followers of Jesus. With this in mind, let us listen to a passage from the Gospel according to St. Mark.
Read through together. Share at tables.
He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
By now it was already late and his disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already very late. Dismiss them so that they can go to the surrounding farms and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” He said to them in reply, “Give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Are we to buy two hundred days’ wages worth of food and give it to them to eat?” He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out they said, “Five loaves and two fish.”
So he gave orders to have them sit down in groups on the green grass. The people took their places in rows by hundreds and by fifties. Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to [his] disciples to set before the people; he also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied. And they picked up twelve wicker baskets full of fragments and what was left of the fish. Those who ate [of the loaves] were five thousand men.

Gifts Received
15 Minutes
Each of us has been entrusted with many gifts and blessings. Living as a good steward invites us to grow in gratitude for our gifts, nurture them to bear fruit, and share with others in all aspects of our lives. Acknowledging our gifts is a way to give glory to God who is the Giver of all good gifts.
Consider the gifts that have been entrusted to you. As a springboard, consider your life, time, faith, relationships, talents and strengths, job/financial security, material possessions, creation.
Make a list of your many gifts. Be specific and be bold in naming your gifts (this is not the time for false humility). The gifts are given by God and naming them is a way of giving glory to the Giver.
Share: After a few moments have passed, share with one another. If you are familiar with each other, affirm as the person names their gifts. Following this sharing, speak briefly about the impact of sharing these gifts in service, caring, and sharing – at home, work, school, parish, or world.`

Impact of Stewardship
15 Minutes
Take time to assess the elements of stewardship already in place in a parish or in your Family of Parishes. Use this worksheet (PDF) to facilitate discussion in the large group.
- Which elements are already in place in a parish or in your Family of Parishes?
- What would be the impact – in the lives of people and in the life of your Family of Parishes – if every person understood him or herself as created in God’s image, entrusted with many gifts and blessings, and lived as a good steward in their lives?
