Sacraments Summary
2025 Report
Summary
The archdiocese continues to experience a steady growth trend of 1 to 2% increase over the last 4 years measured by the rate of baptisms over deaths, but the rate of growth is slowing if not leveling. Though baptisms now outpace deaths, a small increase in deaths this year has limited the overall growth.
Ohio Changes
Ohio data indicates a movement from a negative and towards a slow but positive population trend based on a slow decline in deaths year over year as the major attributing factor. Ohio births have leveled out for the last couple years while the national decline averages are between 2 to 3% for the same period.
Archdiocesan Sacramental Celebrations
Overall, the archdiocese is experiencing a continued leveling if not a gradual slowing trend in all parish reported sacramental reception. Since counts are likely tied to Catholics participating in the life of the Church, this could mean that based on increasing Mass counts year over year that sacramental counts could be expected to begin rising in the future.
Though we are seeing a slow increase in Mass attendance we are also seeing a possible leveling in registered household numbers. It’s possible that parish registration is not as important to younger Catholics and so growing Mass counts could be a better measurement of a parish’s health than registrations for some time to come. If this trend continues the future sacramental counts may be determined by our parish’s engagement with this unregistered but faithfully attending Catholic group.
First Communion and Confirmation
These indicators certainly show a slow leveling in the number of children receiving the Sacraments of Initiation. The overall trend is downward and based on the slow decline in marriages, it is not expected to reverse over the next few years.
Marriages
As noted above, registered parishioner counts are leveling out even though Mass counts are increasing. This may indicate an opportunity for young adult and marriage prep ministries to reach out to this unregistered population and minister to Catholics who may not feel part of the parish community. Engaging this unregistered community through social and age group specific events could draw them into a fuller experience of the life of Church and as a result increase their participation in the sacraments.
