February 13th 8:30-3:00pm Hamilton County Educational Services Center
The Science of Writing session will focus on building strong writing foundations through the Science of Writing. Educators will learn how intentional routines, direct instruction, and strategic feedback support young writers as they develop stamina, confidence, and independence. Participants will explore developmentally appropriate writing experiences and practical ways to establish clear routines from day one, ensuring writing instruction is engaging, manageable, and productive. Led by Kristina Smekens of Smekens Education, this session equips teachers with a step-by-step plan to launch writing instruction with momentum.
The SOR session provides an overview of the Science of Reading, highlighting its core components and the role of language development in literacy. Participants will explore evidence-based instructional strategies, examine how assessment connects to instruction, and reflect on ways to integrate Science of Reading practices into their classrooms.
