Position Summary:

Position Summary: Covington Latin School is seeking a compassionate, dynamic, and skilled School Counselor to join our team. The School Counselor will be responsible for providing mental health counseling, supporting students in the college counseling process, collaborating with the Dean of Studies in implementing Alternative Learning Plans, and assisting with standardized testing preparation and administration (AP, PSAT, and ACT). Our student body consists of academically gifted and accelerated learners, and the ideal candidate will be experienced in meeting the unique emotional, social, and academic needs of high-achieving students. This individual will play a key role in promoting student well-being, academic success, and long-term planning within a rigorous, supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:
Mental Health Counseling:
● Provide individual and group counseling services tailored to the social and emotional needs of gifted and accelerated students.
● Develop and implement prevention programs that promote mental health awareness, stress management, and emotional resilience.
● Support students navigating perfectionism, heightened expectations, peer relationships, and identity development, which are common among gifted populations.
● Maintain confidential counseling records in compliance with school policies and regulations.

College Counseling Support:
● Assist students with high academic aspirations in navigating the college planning and admissions process, including college selection, application strategies, and essay
development.
● Help students align their academic strengths and personal goals with selective college opportunities.
● Collaborate with families to ensure timely and strategic support for all students throughout the college application timeline.
● Organize workshops for students and families on competitive college admissions and scholarship opportunities.

Alternative Learning Plans:
● Work with the Dean of Studies to develop and implement Alternative Learning Plans (ALPs) for gifted students who may also have asynchronous learning profiles, twice-exceptionalities (2e), or specific academic or emotional support needs.

Standardized Testing:
● Coordinate all aspects of standardized testing, including AP exams, PSAT, and ACT, ensuring compliance with testing protocols.
● Provide support and resources for test preparation specific to high-achieving students.
● Serve as a liaison with testing organizations and families for accommodations and special testing circumstances.
Collaboration and Communication:
● Partner with faculty, parents, and administration to promote student wellness and success.
● Participate actively in faculty and student support meetings to provide insight into student well-being.

Additional Duties:
● Engage in ongoing professional development with an emphasis on gifted education, college admissions trends, and adolescent mental health.
● Other responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School.

Qualifications:
● Master’s degree in School Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
● Valid state certification or licensure in school counseling (or eligibility to obtain).
● Experience working with gifted, talented, and high-achieving students preferred.
● Knowledge of adolescent development, mental health, and social-emotional needs of gifted learners.
● Familiarity with college admissions processes, including selective and highly competitive institutions.
● Understanding of learning differences, accommodations, and support strategies for twice-exceptional students.
● Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
● Proficiency with educational technology and data management tools.

Preferred Experience:
● Prior experience working in a gifted environment.
