CRS GLOBAL SOLIDARITY CONFERENCE: PROMOTING PEACEBUILDING

Saturday, October 12th, 9:00am-2:30pm, University of Dayton Torch Lounge

When we look at the world today, we are heartbroken by the level of war, devastation, and poverty. Coupled with many domestic challenges, we often turn inward, becoming indifferent and isolationist in the face of international responsibilities. However, in our Catholic tradition, we believe all things are created by God, and – in that way – we are all related to one another and a part of this community called Creation. This is Solidarity.

Solidarity is not just a feeling of being connected, but also a commitment to others.  It is seeing each other as our brothers and sisters for whom we are responsible, no matter where they are. When we reach out, touch other people’s lives and allow ourselves to be touched, we practice solidarity. When one part of the body suffers, the whole body suffers, and when one part rejoices, they all rejoice. This virtue of solidarity is described by St. Pope John Paul II as “a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good; that is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all” (Sollicitudo Rei Socialis, no. 38).

In this period of global conflict and polarization, the CRS Global Solidarity Conference offers a space to learn about initiatives in the world and our local communities that foster peace. Connect with groups committed to dialogue and learn how we might nourish peace within ourselves. Then, with the grace of God, bring it forth into the world.
